Nobody's a Nobody
Last month I wrote about the search of singles to find fulfilment, love and
significance in relationships. Some people think that you are "nobody 'til
somebody loves you" (that old song line!) The truth is your significance
lies in your own personal worth - who you are and how your life has been formed.
However, we are constantly being fed the line that without good looks and money
we are losers - we are nobodies!
The Herald Sun guide last month ran an article on rags to riches nobodies. It
started "Do you want to be a star?" It continued, "Well, weep no
more - sit on an island - take your clothes off - enter the draw to marry a
millionaire on TV."
The subliminal message is that you are a nobody and you want to get out of
nobody land.
They said, "TV producers love nonentities." Nonentities? What an
insult to uniquely created human beings! This message is so different to the one
that the Focal Point participants base their human values on. God said,
"Let us make humans in our own image, in our likeness, and let them rule
over the fish of the sea, over the livestock, over all the earth." So He
made them as such, and it is recorded that "God blessed them and said to
them - be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth." So, a created
"nobody?"
An image problem? I won't wear it - an individual has no significant role in life?
- not as I read the makers manual!
Olympic fever has gripped us over the past weeks and we see the best of the
world's athletes competing with amazing feats. Yet what I appreciated most was
the high value places on non medalling competitors, small country teals and
'Eric the Eel' who nearly drowned! Not least of those valued were the thousands
of volunteers who did the menial tasks.
So maybe Australian society is getting a glimpse of what it is like when
'losers' are seen to be 'winners', and all are valued for who they are rather
than what they look like or what their level of expertise is. Jesus said,
"God loved us so much that He gave His only Son so that we could come into
relationship with Him and inherit eternal life." Let's get away from the
mentality that is expressed in the words of a song on the current hit parade:
"You're the captain and I'm no-one and I own one."
